Week 25
This week in Social studies, we learned all about our great state of Texas. We read books about our Texas symbols, such as the Lone Star flag, the bluebonnet flower, the pecan tree, and the mockingbird. We created a Texas flag and practiced reciting the Texas pledge. See if your child can recite it to you. We talked about cowboys and cowgirls. We made ourselves as cowboys and cowgirls!
In ELA, we learned about the letter Gg, how to write it, what sound it makes and things that begin with Gg.
In Math, we identified opposites. We illustrated a picture of an opposite, learned an opposite song, and acted out some opposites. Ask your child to act out an opposite for you.
In Science, we started learning about frogs. We studied about their characteristics, their life cycle, and their habitat. The kids were very surprised to know that female frogs lay eggs and they don't look like chicken eggs.
We had a visit from the fire department this week and learned all about fire safety. The firemen discussed that the students should not play with matches or lighters, if they have a fire to get out and call 911 from a neighbor's house, stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch on fire and have a safe meeting place if your house catches on fire. Also your child may ask you to show them where the smoke detectors are in the house and ask you if you have changed the battery lately.
The firemen discusssed that the students should not be afraid of them and that this is what the firemen would look like and sound like if they had to help them get out of a fire.
He told them that he would be down low and crawl to them because the smoke would rise above them and the clean air would be down low.
Ms. Carroll was glad to get out of the uniform. It was very bulky and heavy.
We had to cover our ears when the firemen let us hear the siren. It was so loud!

In Pre-K this week, we learned about President's day. We read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We talked about who they were and why they were important. We made a bubble map of the things that we learned about them. We also made representations of them to hang on the wall.
We learned about dental health too. We discussed dentists and how they help us take care of our teeth. We talked about healthy food and unhealthy food for our teeth. We discussed how to take care of our teeth by brushing them after each meal, flossing, eating healthy foods, and visiting the dentist twice a year. We talked about sugary foods and how they can give us cavities!
We learned the letter Vv this week. We learned things that begin with Vv, how to write Vv, and its sound. In math, we learned strategies to help us count such as, eyeballing, counting with our fingers, reading numerals, forming a mental picture in our heads, and using a number line. We practiced counting using these strategies. We played a game called "Finger flash".
Reminders:
1. Group and Individual pictures will be taken on Wednesday. I sent home the picture envelope on Thursday. Please check your child's backpack daily and go through the papers. Some students have backpacks full of papers. Also please sign folders daily. We are half way through the year and we are expecting more from the Pre-K students. Some students are still having trouble listening and following directions. Please check the folder so you can give us support. Thank you!
2. Library day is on Wednesday. Please make sure your child is returning their books each week. The librarian gave each child a baggie with a red handle to keep their book safe and clean. Please make sure they keep their book in the baggie.
3. Don't forget that GFAA has a dress code. No letter or numbers on clothing and tennis shoes should be worn daily for P.E. and recess. Please check your child's clothes to make sure they are following dress code.

Week 23 in Pre-K
This week in Pre-K, we studied about passage of time. We talked about our day in Pre-K and what we do each hour of the day. We made pictures to show our daily schedule and hung them up in the hallway. We talked about things that take more time and some that take less time.
time than connecting links together.
We discovered that sorting bears by color takes more time than putting them in a straight line.
We studied the letter Dd this week. We learned about mixing colors. We mixed two colors together to create a new color. Ask your child what color they get when they mix yellow & blue, red & yellow, or blue & red. We read many valentine books and learned a few valentine songs. We made a valentine for our families. Bees were buzzing all over our room. "Bee" my valentine! I hope you enjoyed them. They turned out cute!
Our valentine party on Thursday was a hit! Thanks to all the parents that donated food and treats. Thank you for decorating the valentine boxes at home. They were so cute and creative! I wish that I would have taken a picture of them.
Mrs. Carroll and I want to thank you all for the wonderful gifts, candy, and cards that we received for valentine's day. You totally spoiled us!

Week 21
We learned about groundhogs and shadows this week. We made a groundhog puppet and went outside to look at our shadows. We used our bodies to make animal shadows. Please let your child watch the news tomorrow to see if the groundhog sees his shadow. They are very curious!
We learned the letter Ll this week. We practiced writing Ll's, the sound Ll makes, and learned words that started with Ll. Ask your child to tell you some words they learned.
We also worked on measurement. We measured our bodies and put the class in order from shortest to tallest. We measured objects in our classroom with links and recorded our findings. We read the story of the Three Bears and ordered the bears from shortest to tallest.
We also shared our 100 homework projects. Every project was different! They look super hanging on the wall. If your child did not bring their project yet, please have them do it this weekend so we can share theirs on Monday. Please keep the 100 things on the folder provided, so they are easier to hang up. I don't think I made that clear in the note attached to the folder.
If you were asked to bring an item for the 100th day snack, don't forget to bring it by Wednesday, Feb. 6th. We will have our 100 day snack on Thursday, Feb. 7th.
Below are some of the 100 homework projects:
